Recently, I had the opportunity to watch the Washburn High School Boys Basketball Team vs. the DeLaSalle High School Boys Basketball Team play for the Minnesota State 3A Championship. What a nail biter the game was! For much of the game the Islander’s of DeLaSalle were winning, but never by very much; Never more than 8 points to be exact. Kudos to the Millers, they never panicked and played hard right down to the end.
Washburn took the lead late with opportunities at the charity stripe (free-throw line) to actually win the ball game during regulation play.
Unfortunately for the Millers the free throws needed to seal the game were missed and the game ended up in over time. During the overtime period one of Washburn’s players made a fantastic play to actually take the ball from one end of the floor to the other and score a tough lay-up in traffic with less than 7 seconds remaining. With the seconds ticking away, the Islander’s inbounded the ball to their senior point guard, who dribbled it up the floor and made a heck of a pass to one of DeLaSalle’s best shooters, and with less than 2 seconds on the clock the player caught the ball, shot it and buried it right in the net! Final score: WHS 56, DHS 57. What a game!
I only bring this up to remind you that opportunities only come around once in awhile. We have to be prepared to make our free-throws when the time comes. Many of you hung around like Washburn, through the tough years. You didn’t panic. You didn’t quit under the pressure. You stayed in the game while others quit.
Put yourself in a position to win by just being there. Half of it is just being there. Get yourself ready and do more open houses, call more, send out emails, write more handwritten notes/cards, text more, engage more people on Facebook. Do more of everything. There is no excuse not to have a better year this year than last.
The timing is right to really be of service for your clients. If you don’t ASK them, I guarantee somebody else will… Don’t miss those free-throws, don’t miss this opportunity!
Thanks once again for allowing me to rant…
