I am sick of those god awful spam emails that offer the next “silver bullet” in real estate. Those fantastic offers that claim they will show you the way to the Holy Grail. Make you Rich beyond belief. Lessen your average work week by 80 percent. So on and so on. How about the goals and goal experts? Those so called…real estate professionals and coaches, who promise that for a small “fee” they will turn your business around, change your work habits, help you gain a focus and make more money?! Do you know the type I am talking about? You know, the people that spam you around the first of the year proclaiming they are the ones who can “help you” get to the next level. They have the magic “goal achievement formula.” Have you ever received any of these annoying emails or offers? No never…Right!!… All you have to do to achieve your goals is pay the sender of the email. Ha!
I am not an expert at setting goals. Rather, I’m an achiever. I believe in ACHIEVEMENT… To me “goal” is the wrong word. It tells me there’s something I HOPE or SEEK to achieve. I think you should call them the “achievements I’m striving for, and intend to make happen.” Whoa! That sounds like a whole different (better) process.
The reason most goals are not met is simple: Starting with the goal is wrong. Making the goal is the middle of the process.
BIG PICTURE: BEFORE YOU MAKE A GOAL, YOU NEED INFORMATION. YOU NEED TO DEFINE YOUR OWN REALITY AND YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU INTEND TO ACHIEVE.
Just a little food for thought as we start our preparation for 2013.
Thanks for allowing me to rant…
